Birch tree bending

Q&A

We have a patch of birch trees on the northeast side of our house. One shoot is older. When small shoots grow, they all lean to the east (and down a hill). We tried tying some to the older shoot, but they still lean. There are several large pin oaks to the West and the house is on the South. Are they looking for the sun? Any ideas to make them a little less bent over? Thanks! - Janean -

River birch always tend to lean as that is more their natural habit. But if there is shade the plants will tend to grow away from the shade and toward the sun. So my hunch is that is what is happening in this case. Really not much you can do about it. It is just survival in nature.
