Coppicing -- can it go too far?

Q&A

We have a very qualified arborist company here, and I wanted two large Rose of Sharons coppiced. But I had no idea they would cut all the way to ground level. Is this normal? They did the same to five spireas, which I usually cut back to about 8” in spring. Please tell me they’ll be okay! - Tina -

The Rose of Sharon will be just fine as will the spirea. I cut my own back every several years as this is a quick and easy way to control height. Don’t worry as they will send out new shoots in a few weeks and by summer be blooming like always. Dennis - Johnson County Extension
