Dividing cannas rhizomes?

Q&A

I read the article here about overwintering cannas. However, can you tell me when is the best time to divide cannas rhizomes. I am finding conflicting information on the internet. Someone says it’s best to do it in the spring so the soil organisms don’t infect the bulbs. Others say to divide as soon as possible. Who’s right? Thanks. - Danny -

I would recommend both fall and spring. By that I mean as you dig and prepare for winter they are going to break apart. This is the start of the division process. Then next spring when planting go ahead and break apart some more. You will need to remove the dead tissue to start with. Then break into more manageable clumps for replanting.
The trick to prevent rotting is to wait and plant once the soils warm in early May before planting.
