Hornets - Are there more each year?

Q&A

I feel like I see a ton of hornets in my back yard, increasing amounts from last year. Is it me or are they becoming more abundant each year? What are their ‘good bug’ qualities as I only know they are mean compared to wasps. And are they the creatures that have holes that burrow in the ground for their nests? Thank you for any info…Christine -

You are probably seeing Cicada Killer Wasps. They are normally not aggressive to people, and populate areas where they will find, you guessed it, cicadas.

I have seen cicadas still emerging, but as cooler weather approaches, their number will diminish, as will the amount of Cicada Killer Wasps. Yes, they burrow in the ground for their nests.

Here is a fact sheet on this insect from KSU. At the end of the bulletin, there is a link to a very fine bulletin from the University of Kentucky: http://www.hfrr.ksu.edu/doc1609.ashx

    Hope this answers your questions.
