Ideas for a new flower garden?

Garden needs flowers...

Q&A

Do you have any suggestions for a flower garden? It is 3’ x 25’ on the south side of a 5’ tall fence. Gets sun more than half a day. Currently there are chives, marigolds, resurrection lilies, rosemary, dill, barberry, mum, catnip and Russian sage. Would like the garden to be a mixture for cuttings and beauty. - Rick -

Rick, It sounds like you have a good start to a beautiful garden! You may want to check out the Prairie Bloom list of perennials, (http://www.prairiestarflowers.com/PrairieBloomnav.html) and the Prairie Star list of annuals (http://www.prairiestarflowers.com/). These are plants that do well in Kansas’ weather extremes. Good luck with your garden!

You also might want to visit some of the Johnson County Extension Master Gardener demonstration gardens for ideas.

This link will provide with a list of the gardens: http://www.johnson.ksu.edu/p.aspx?tabid=109.

I especially recommend the Garden Gallery at 11811 S. Sunset Drive in Olathe.

What a great start. I really like the curves and layout of the bed. I think you need to start by adding some structure or the bones of the garden. The bones create the framework and give year round interest. Try adding some evergreens such as boxwoods and some thing to hide the boxes. Even a small flowering tree or upright evergreen would give that year round appeal. Then you can finish it off with you mix of herbs, perennials, annuals and bulbs. This helps to develop a four season look. Enjoy - Dennis - Johnson County Extension
