Leaf Lettuce and Temperature

Q&A

Last weekend we took the opportunity to plant all of our leaf lettuce varieties in our community garden. Now, very cold weather is again in the forecast….rats! I know lettuce is an early Spring crop and should be planted early but how low of a temperature can they take and still be ok? Thanks! Chuck

After doing some research, I found a helpful website with information about frost damage on lettuce: http://ucanr.edu/blogs/blogcore/postdetail.cfm?postnum=9024 The lettuce will probably undergo a bit of initial damage, but will likely survive the light frost that’s predicted for the next few days. The rain should help protect the leaves, too.
