Liriope rot
I am slowly losing solid green Liriope to a rot. The little leaf clusters around the outside of the plant turn yellow and die a few at a time. It now seems to spread from plant to plant. My variegated type is not affected. Many of my garden areas are edged in Liriope. Is this a seasonal or environmental problem, or will they all rot away? I have read this problem is becoming common in the southeast, esp Florida. Are we doomed with another plant disaster in KC? - Jean -

11 months, 1 week agoHi, Jean,
We have not seen any examples of liriope crown rot. It is possible, of course, but most probably would occur in a very moist environment.
The best thing to do would be bring a sample plant to the Extension Service for analysis.
It would be nice to know also how it has been cared for culturally. Did you cut the liriope back this spring? Liriope is normally very drought resistant, but we have had a very hot, dry spring. Have you watered? And how much? What is the drainage like in the areas where the liriope yellowing?
Liriope is not normally bothered by bugs, but I would check for aphids anyway.
Hope this helps. We will be happy to look at a plant sample at the KSU Research and Extension.
