Mom's mystery plant

Mystery plant

Q&A

My mother (lives in Pennsylvania) discovered this plant growing beside the house, and has had great success in transplanting and starting cuttings. I live in South Dakota and she wants to send me a cutting. What is this plant, and will it grow in the Black Hills? - Teresa -

It was growing outside as a volunteer? Hmm, I was thinking it was some kind of Rex Begonia, but they’re not cold hardy up there in PA. They’re grown as indoor plants. that definitely looks like a begonia to me.

The picture is a little dark to see all the details. Here is my best recommendation for assistance. You have a great Penn State Extension program. Search the internet using the terms of your local county name and Penn State Extension. For example here in my home county I would search Kansas State Extension Johnson County. Once you have located your local county office you can either send better pictures or take a sample of the plant into the office for identification.

I think that is your best bet. Dennis - Kansas State Extension Johnson County
