Mottled leaves falling off tree

mottled leaf

Q&A

I’ve got a tree that I think is a kind of crabapple. Every year the leaves seem to fall early but this year they’re already falling constantly and there aren’t a lot left. They look diseased. Here’s a photo. Do I need to worry about this? - Thanks, Brad -

Brad - this is apple scab one of the most common foliar diseases of apple. It happens in the spring when we have rainy weather. At this point in the year there is nothing that can be done. Fungicide treatments if neccessary should be made from just after bloom through the end of May. Spray after every rain event. Hope this helps - Dennis Johnson County Extension
