Over-wintering roses

Q&A

I have three roses that I put in containers on the deck this summer. Do I put them in the garage for the winter (my original plan) or would it be better for them to just stay on the deck? Do roses need a dormant time? - Linda -

Yes, you can bring them into an unheated garage, but first they should be dormant. Let the roses stay outside until be have a good hard freeze (25 degrees), then they can go into the garage. The soil should be moist. They won’t use much moisture in a dormant state, but the soil should be slightly moist to keep the roots healthy, so check during the winter.

Alternately, you could bury the pots outside. But unless the containers are extremely large, the root balls could freeze if left in containers on the deck.

Sounds like your original plan is a good one.
