Overgrown hollys

Holly

Q&A

I have two hollys that have overgrown their sites. Can they be transplanted? Don’t know their particular name or how old. They were here when I came 10 years ago. The photo I sent the holly is in the back - it has grown since this picture. Thanks - Sharon -

Sharon, I think it is too late now as they plants would not have time to settle in before it gets hot, thus leading to stress.

Early spring is the best time to transplant a holly. You might give it a go in the fall, if you can give them sufficient moisture during the winter, and mulch.

I agree with Carole it is way to late. Either fall or better yet early March is the bet time to transplant. The plant should be dormant. You can prune back some of the overgrown limbs to help control size. Now is a good time to do that.
