Oversized knockout roses

Q&A

My knockout roses are way oversized this year. I didn’t get them pruned a couple of months ago as I had intended to. Can I cut them back to a better size now? They have grown so much larger than last year I’m not even quite sure how to approach trimming them this time around. - Myra -

Knock Out roses can reach 5 feet or more. They require yearly pruning in most yards to keep smaller and in bounds. At this point I would recommend to let this first wave of flowering finish then prune them back. I would not be as hard as the recommended dormant season pruning. I would maybe cut back a couple of feet of growth, back to a lower bud or side branch. This will delay the second round of flowers but will decrease the size. Then in late March cut the plants back to about 12 to 18 inches from the ground and remove a couple of the oldest canes to the ground.
