Peat moss -- should I use it?

Q&A

When I purchased grass seed recently to seed a formerly shaded area of our yard, they also sold me peat moss to put down over it. Since then I’m hearing how peat moss takes centuries to form and we should avoid using so much of it. Do you have any suggestions for what I should have used? - John -

Aged straw or hay free of weed seed makes a good much. One small square bale will cover about 1000 square feet. A thin layer of mulch will protect the seed and keep the soil from drying out as quickly. Kala—Johnson County Extension Master Gardener
