Sad blueberry bush

Blueberry bush

I have a top hat patio blue berry bush. I have had it probably about 3-4 years. This year it has not done very well. - Thanks, cowgirl. -

Thanks for sending a question to the blog.

Since the bluberry bush is being grown in a pot, you will want to refresh the potting soil every couple of years. Bluberry bushes require an acidic soil with good organic matter. You can use a commercial potting mix when repotting the bush. Our clay soils are not acidic enough and do not contain sufficient organic matter to provide a good growing medium.

Your container also looks like it might be too small for optimal growing conditions. You will want to use a 20-24 inch container that holds approximately 7-10 gallons of soil mix.

Bluberries need 6-8 hours of sunlight per day and also should be well watered with good drainage.

You might also consider planting more than one variety for good pollination.

Should I go ahead and try to refresh the soil now or wait until spring? It is in a pretty large pot. Thanks

I think you should wait until early spring to repot the blueberry, before it begins to put on new growth.
