Tropicana cannas in winter?
I would like to know how to winter these in my garage. I was told to take them out of the pot and bring them in and put in peat moss. Question — do I remove all the old soil from the roots, do I put the bare roots in peat moss and keep the peaet moss wet? I did cut the stalks back to about 19 inches and waited until the stalks turned black. Please understand I am new to gardening and need step by step instructions. - William -

3. Let the roots dry in a warm location for a few weeks to allow excess moisture to dry from the stalks. 4. Store cool and dry. Covering with peat moss is a good idea. 5. If a cold winter make sure the garage does not freeze. If a very cold winter maybe take to the basement.
If they are in a container maybe just cut off the tops and set the pot and all in the garage for the winter.
Hope that helps - Dennis, Johnson County Extension
