Underplanting recommendations

Q&A

Hello— would love suggestions of perennial underplanting options.

These underplantings would go under my azaleas in my front yard which is only hot colors (reds, yellows, and oranges).

Thanks in advance for your suggestions. - Displaced Clevelander -

Welcome to KC, Displaced Clevelander! I can give you a list of plants that pair well with azaleas. How well these do depends on the amount of sun and shade in that spot. You can select based on your personal preferences for color, texture, etc.

A nice groundcover that is variegated and yellow-toned is Ajuga replans ‘Golden Glow’, which is available even at the big box stores. Other selections might include:

Ferns, and there are so many to choose from! Hostas, a huge variety Solomon’s Seal, available also in a variegated form Toad lily Lungwort (spring flowering) Vinca and pachysandra (groundcovers) Windflowers and spring bulbs Wild Ginger (can get invasive, so be warned) Coleus (foliage plant offered in many color varieties and great for areas with shade and some sun).
