Using compost when?

Q&A

I just dug out two trash bins full of great compost from my compost pile. I’ve heard that you can spread that on your gardens in the fall and just let it sit but that never made any sense to me. Wouldn’t it be better to keep it until spring? Thanks - Cindy -

The ideal method is to work the compost into the soil in the fall. This allows for the tillage to happen in the fall. Then come spring after the natural freezing and thawing the soil needs to be lightly raked and you are ready for planting.

Spring conditions are usually wet and we do not want to till or work wet soils. So the bottom line is that fall tillage and applications of compost help prepare the soil for timely spring planting.
