When to plant trees

Q&A

My son-in-law wants to plant some ornamental trees this fall because he won’t have much time next spring. It doesn’t seem like it’s a good time to plant trees to me. Can it be done? - Thanks, Cindy -

Fall is an excellent time to plant most trees. Fall planted trees get a great head start over spring planted trees as they do not have to deal with imminent hot weather.

The key is to properly plant, mulch, and retain soil moisture even during the winter as the root systems begin establishing themselves below ground.

Happy planting in late September and October.
