When to transplant to replace pines?

Q&A

We are about to lose 5 large pine trees in our back yard. They are scheduled to be taken out in November. I am afraid we will lose most of the surrounding shrubs unless we remove the shrubs, set them aside for the day and replant the day after. When is the best and safest time for this type of transplanting? - Judy -

Your plan sounds like a good one, just be sure to keep the rootballs covered and moist when they are out of the ground. Although you don’t say what kind of shrubs you have, November should be a good time, as long as the soil hasn’t frozen.

After the shrubs have been replanted, you should mulch them well, and provide moisture during the winter.

Good luck, Carole Johnson County Extension Master Gardener
