Why do squirrels work so hard to drive me crazy?

Q&A

Why do squirrels and/or chipmunks continue to dig up my flower containers? Are they looking for something? Does the moisture make their feet feel good? It’s discouraging to still be trying to save plants this late in the season. - Brad -

Wow, if I only knew….! Container soil is easy to dig in. I imagine they are either looking for or burying nuts.

You might try excluding them with chicken wire for a few weeks, maybe they will move on. Or cover any bare soil with spiky sweetgum tree balls.

In my garden once a container is filled with plants and no visible dirt is showing they tend to stop disrupting things.

It is very discouraging. I am plucking tomatoes off the vines as soon as they start to turn color in an attempt to thwart any squirrel thefts.

They only thing I can really say is that I understand your frustration. Mother Nature at work, I guess.
