What kind of evergreen?
yews do okay in some shade
junipers, spruces and cedars do better in more light
(also things like hollies or azaleas can be considered evergreen)
It really depends on the amount of shade/sun and the type of evergreen. Most need some good sunlight for best growth. Under light shade they would do fine but just not as thick and lush.
You are on the right track and that is to match your exposure with the right plant. Without more information I can not make a specific recommendation.
