I got serious this year about composting and I have a pretty good batch. I've heard that it works to spread compost on gardens in the fall but that makes no sense to me. Wouldn't it be better to wait until spring and then dig it into the gardens?

Fall Tillage
I just like to spade in the fall and add the organic matter. That way I am ready to go. Seems like the soil is always wet and deep spading and incorporating is out of the question. But with fall prep as I said rake and go in the spring. That way I can get in the garden earlier and with one less spring chore.

Fall Additions
Preparing the soil in the fall is a great way to get a jump on spring chores. Adding compost or other organic sources gives it more time to work into the soil. Basically the fall work allows the freezing and thawing of winter to do your work. Rough till or spade the garden and just rake it down in the spring and you are ready to plant.
Working in the spring the soil is often times wet and hard to till. Working wet soil is not good as it ruins the structure.

If your compost is already
If your compost is already broken down I would save it till next spring as a top dressing and/or compost tea.
For anything you get this fall I would till that in late autumn like Dennis mentioned so that by next summer most of it will have broken down and start its magic.
I grind up leaves well before adding them. I also add some alfalfa meal before working it in to the soil.
