I visited Skagit Valley and was so taken I ordered 40 Daffodil bulbs. Well, I have planted 10 in our yucky clay soil (with plenty of amendments) My question, is there an easier way to plant the remaining 30? I don't know what I was thinking! I did purchase an auger for drill but the bulbs are twice the size of any around here plus it doesn't work in the clay soil.

Bulb Planting
Let's face it planting bulbs can be hard work. When they do it on TV gardening shows the bulb planter or spade just slices right into the soil. That does not happen in heavy clay. Here are some short cuts or should I say options. -
1. Prepare a planting area by digging the entire bed about 6 to 8 inches deep and then plant.
2. Bulb bit - they are about 2 inches across that work for most larger bulbs. You must have a moist soil for it to work in the clay. Regular drill bits are small. This may be your problem.
3. Bulb planter, in heavy clay soil forget it!. When I use without preparing the soil I end up with blisters on my palm.
4. Mounding method. Spade up the existing soil a couple of inches and plant. Then add additional soil/compost mix over the top to create the depth needed.
5. Treat your bulbs as annual. Plant only about 3 inches deep and then discard after blooming. Most people don't like this method but it is an option.
Bottom line there is no simple way.
