From Jennifer:
I am looking for some help any help I can get. I have a rose garden with tons of grass in them. I know that I can not use Round up in the roses. So what should I use? I have heard of a few products Sledgehammer, Q4, MSMA, Manage, and Image. Thank you for your time and help.

Grass in Roses
Thanks Dennis. I live in AZ so my grass is all over in my roses. I have tried hand pulling and there is to much. I will try Round up and brushing it on. I believe is it nut kind of grass. It is around all year round. I made tha mistake of one year tring to plant grass for a yard and well it got in the roses and will not leave. Thank you for all the help. You are one of the few I have found who are willing to help. Thanks again.
Arizona Roses
Well that does change the grass id a bit. Still with a grass in a perennial plant the Roundup products are the way to go. Not to disappoint you but to prepare you - it will probably take repeated applications to control a perennial weed.
Hang in there.

PS - You can also contact your local Arizona Extension for local help. Just search Arizona Extension and then your county for the closest office.
Weedy Roses
The first step is to identify what type of grass you have in the garden. Is is an annual or a perennial? Or is it nutgrass? Without the basic information I can only give some general guidelines.
Roundup type products - are safe as long as you do not touch the rose bush. Shield the plant with a piece of cardboard and spot spray. A paint brush can be used to wipe the spray mixture directly on the grass. Once these products dry they will cause no damage. This treatment will be effective on both annual and perennial type weeds.
Hand pulling - works best on annual grassy type weeds.
Mulching - if these are annual weeds. Start with a weed free bed and add 3 to 4 inches of wood chip mulch to reduce weed growth.
Sledgehammer or Manage - is used for nutgrass. It is to early for nutgrass to have emerged this spring. It is not labeled for flower beds.
Hope this helps - let me know what follow up questions you might have.

You can now buy applicators
You can now buy applicators on a stick for Roundup. Basically, they're broom handles with old dishtowels wrapped around and duct taped to the ends -- which is what I cobbled together to make an applicator for lots of pesky stuff growingin ornamental beds. It's also a good way to apply herbicide when it's too windy to spray. I've heard of some people also using paint rollers.
