I have 2 grapevines, a Thompson seedless & a Niagara, that I planted a few years back. There are lots of clusters of grapes on both vines, & I was going to ask how to know when they are ready to pick, since they are both white grape varieties & won't change color, but then I noticed recently that the grapes are developing brown spots, then are turning completely brown & shriveling on the vines. What is going on & what should I do?

For next year...
A recent presentation I attended suggested fall sanitation and Immunox at flower petal fall in the spring for black rot...and to be sure not to use Immunox Plus that includes an insecticide for ornamentals and is not approved for consumable fruits or vegetables.
Also, I seem to remember reading that Thompson grape clusters in general do not ripen evenly in our climate. That may make harvesting another challenge when considering when a cluster is ripe.
Grape Issues
Even thought they are green grapes you will still see a color and size change in the grapes. Taste is also another good indicator of when they are ready to pick.
Your other issue is not as easy to solve. You have described the most common grape disease - Black Rot. At this point there is not really anything you can do. This disease must be prevented with fungicide sprays. With the heavy rains it will be really bad this year. I am attaching a link to the K-State publication fruit pest control.
