Mary NemecekIt seems that gardening has always had a role in my life. My grandmother had an enormous love of plants -- all of them. I can remember every morning after she made her coffee we would trudge out to the yard to put her coffee grounds in the garden. Decades later I learned about the benefits of grounds in the garden and I was in awe of how she knew that so many years ago.
Having inherited her love of gardening, I have carried it thru my life. I am currently working on reclaiming the overgrown and untended yard at my house. I’ve been here 4 years now and some days I’m winning and some days not so much. After the first year, in which I planted many daylilies and hostas along with other “deer candy,” you guessed it, the deer discovered me. I think they take great enjoyment in delaying my progress. Even worse, they change the rules on me all the time. I plant something deer-resistant and they quickly develop a taste for it. Needless to say my garden is always changing and always challenging me.
In 2008 and I became a Master Gardener of Greater Kansas City. It has been great fun being around so many valuable resources and fabulous gardeners. I am on the speaker’s bureau and committee member for the flower, lawn and garden show. This fall I began the training for the Missouri Master Naturalist program. My other love is photography. I have an MBA from Rockhurst University and for my day job I work in the pharmaceutical industry.
