my darned old arthritis has been acting up and haven't been able to do any of my transplanting. Is it too late now to divide my plants or catch some good sales for new beds? or would they do better in the spring?

Time Yet to Divide and Transplant
There is still time. Transplanting woody plants such as shrubs is best done when dormant. This would be after the leaves drop. So you are to early.
Perennials such as hosta, iris and daylily can still be divided. It would have been better back in early September.
I would go ahead and do the work you need to. If the plant is more difficult to grow or touchy about winter conditions I would wait till spring.
