Kathleen Ward wrote in KC Star,on page D2 of Thurs., Oct 8th, it says:"...in mid-Oct you can put down a broad leaf herbicide for your law
Since plants are not actively growing in the fall, will that herbicide still be effective?
I've told you have to get to the roots of any plant while they are actively grown per staff at Soil Service.

Fall Weed Control
Fall weed control of dandelions, henbit and chickweed is best done in the fall. These are the main early spring weeds in the lawn. At this time of year they are small seedlings and much easier to control.
In the spring as they are flowering they are more difficult to control. Also in the spring all the trees and shrubs are leafing out. Drift of the herbicides is the number one plant problem we see in our office a month to six weeks after spring treatments.
Fall is the best time to apply Trimec, triclopy or carfentrazone to control the so-called winter annuals. Kathleen is correct.
Also I would recommend you avoid using an Ester form of 2,4-D as it is more volatile and can drift to non-target plants. This is more of an ag use herbicide. Amine forms of 2,4-D are more common in urban settings as they do not drift as much.
Dennis - Johnson County Extension
Yes...and no
The staff at Soil Service is correct, but a lot of broadleaf weeds germinate this time of year and then plague us in the spring into early summer. So dandelions -- a perennial weed - should be treated now, preferably on a day that starts out frosty and warms up later in the day. That's the kind of day when the chemical will be transported to the roots very quickly. Henbit is an annual weed that germinates in the fall, and you can see its purple blooms all over the Central Plains come springtime. I've just noticed the first henbit germinating and I'll spray it in a week or two.
By the way, be very very careful about spraying broadleaf weed killer in the lawn. I like to think I know what I'm doing, and I burned a fair bit of grass while spot treating for dandelions a week ago. I mixed it carefully and yes, I read the booklet, but I think I applied it too heavily. Also, do not spray weed killer on newly germinated grass. Trust me on that one...

packaging of these have different mix rates for different kinds of grasses
if mixed right just wetting the plant rather than soaking it works
The ester based formulations
The ester based formulations of 2,4-D work better in the cold than the more common and less expensive forms. Most nurseries will know which one this is.
It works best above 50F.
Avoid spraying it on a windy day.
