My neighbor this past weekend gave me several daylilies. She was planting them after digging them up from her old house & transferring them into her new home’s backyard. She found that she had too many to fit in the space she had. I’m trying to find a location in my yard for these very tall varieties (4') and I wondered if there is a way to overwinter them until the spring. They have some dirt still on the roots in a large pot & are waiting for me to do something with them. It’s almost November & that seemed to be rather late in the season for planting them although that's exactly what my neighbor was doing. Hope you can help me out. I’m not sure what to do with my gift until I figure out a location for them.

Daylily donation
If you have now figured out where to plant the daylilies, I would go ahead and put them in a permanent location and mulch well.
But if you do not know where you will locate the daylilies, I would leave them in the pot, fill the pot with potting soil, put the pot in the ground in a temporary location and mulch the pot after we have a hard freeze. The daylilies should be planted in the pot at the same depth they were before they were dug. By planting the pot you will conserve the daylilies' for spring planting in a permanent location AND protect the roots from freezing (which would probably happen if you left them above ground.) Mulching will help conserve an even soil temperature and moisture. Good luck.
