The best thing you can do for your soil is to keep a good, rich compost pile for planting. Composting is actually super easy to do, and even easier if you have handy tools like a lawn vacuum, especially if you have a large yard. These sweet machines double as mulchers and chippers also.

Whether added as fertiliser, in rainfall, through release from the degradation of organic matter or by the weathering of soil minerals, the fate of potassium is determined by the same set of geochemical reactions.
Adding fertiliser potassium causes a rapid increase in the concentration of solution potassium. 646-563 As a result, potassium ions can enter clay particles through openings in the layers, 646-363 a process known as potassium fixation. Although some potassium can enter deep into the interlayer space (especially if it is held open by larger ions), 642-524 most of the potassium ends up deposited towards the outer margin of the layer. 156-215 This potassium can be slowly released over time.
Just curious...exactly how high were the Potassium (K) concentrations of your soil?
Generally speaking, high levels of potassium are not a problem for common lawn and garden plants. Additionally, potassium is immobile in the soil environment; therefore, it is not a major leaching threat.
Having high soil potassium concentrations is not really a "problem" and is actually fairly common. The only problem is if you continue to apply potassium fertilizer, which would be a waste of money and natural resources.
For the future, make sure you buy fertilizer that has a zero in the last digit of its gauranteed analysis, e.g. 10-10-0.
Potassium will leach from the soil. Just dont add any for awhile. If you are talking about grass try to find a fertilizer lower in the 3rd number (that is not always easy to find in garden centers).
Excessive potassium can cause problems by blocking calcium uptake. One could see problems related to calcium deficiency such as blossom end rot or other signs of calcium deficiency (generally in new growth one sees yellowing between the veins and possibly browning of the leaf margins). This is a case when gypsum would help to supply some extra calcium (lime would help add calcium too but would likely alter pH).
Organic matter would help too.
Potassium is for general health issues. It is a catalyst in enzyme reactions, helps in protein synthesis, neutralizes organic acids, and regulates cellular ionic balance (which functions to open stomates, ie organ which helps the plants "breath").

The soil test should have provided you with an analysis and recommendations for improving your soil. Potassium is the nutrient that encourages root growth. So high potassium should not really cause any problems because the plant will only take what it needs. I don't know of any plant that either thrives or starves on potassium!
Of course adding organic matter will always improve your soil especially in flower or vegetable beds.
