I planted 2 5ft Crepe Myrtles last September, they were beautiful with lots of blooms. I mulched and watered faithfully as I did 2 flowering trees planted at the same time. My crepe myrtles have no leaves on one and the branches are dead. The other one is starting a bud at the base maybe 2 buds but no buds on the other. What happened?! and Why? Did I lose them? And you spoke of cutting them back to the base but do you do that to ones 5' tall? What do I do?

Crepe myrtles top growth is really hardy in zone 6 to 7 or south. This far north they will freeze back to the ground pretty much every year. Some varieties do better than others. Also a warmer micro-climate helps with the winter kill.
I have seen crepe myrtles reach 5 feet in this area but that is following milder winters. Most stay below 4 feet because of the winter die-back.
Be patient they still might green up from the base - give them another couple of weeks.
